Selecta Group, February 2009

 Selecta expert in cashless payment

Every year 100 million products are paid cashless when people are buying from Selecta vending machines. It was in September 2007, when the world’s first PayPass EMV certified vending transaction was done at Selecta machine. Nowadays alternative paying methods are becoming more and more popular throughout Europe and Selecta is one of the leading companies providing cashless payments in vending.

Already in use
Perfect for today’s fast-paced lifestyles, cashless payment reduces queue time and makes the vending experience quick and easy. Cash cards and cash keys are already in use in many offices in Europe. But this is not only a concept for private environments. In some public places, such as airports and train stations, consumers can pay with credit cards at Selecta machines. In addition, mobile phone payments are available at several hundred sites throughout Europe.

Selecta expertise
By the end of 2008, over 500'000 card transactions were made at Selecta machines. Furthermore, over 1 million times our products were sold via mobile phone. Understanding our clients and consumers to create better vending experiences is what drives our technological development.

Our detailed consumer knowledge is based on profound market research and consumer surveys conducted internationally. This has helped us understanding the consumer needs in Europe and compare with best practices in the US and Asia.

We are actively involved in expert committees standardising and developing cashless payment solutions. Our opinion is listened and we can provide a valuable view on how to design solutions that consumers are looking for. In example, we are a partner in the world’s first nationwide cutting-edge NFC (Near Field Communication) mobile payment roll-out, and as a part of this project over 400 Selecta machines are available in Austria, where consumers can pay via mobile phones. We are also working in a close co-operation with credit card payments providers to develop solutions to fit into our vending machines.

Our knowledge is based on several years of experience and we know what works in different countries. Moreover we know what kinds of payments systems are available and what fits best for certain needs.

What’s next?
Cashless vending is growing and customers want more flexibility – but what is coming next? Of course cash will remain the most important way to pay. The ongoing standardisation and consolidation of payments types for small transactions will shape the industry. Contactless payments, where a card or mobile phone is waved over the reader to make the payment, will become predominant in the future. Public payment solutions could change the picture in closed private payment environments in the long term.

Developing cashless payment methods is a continuous process. As important, it is to understand our customers and the market needs. Selecta has over 15’000 potential sites, where the cashless payments could be used in the near future. Providing flexibility will serve both our clients and consumers. If we can offer convenient payment methods, people are more likely to buy more snacks and refreshments. We help putting the modern technology into the package, so that everybody wins. This is a part of our commitment to provide enjoyable vending experiences.
