The design of the program's focus areas supports our ambition of reaching a living income for coffee farmers by increasing the quantity and quality of coffee yield and diversification of income. The project also strengthens women's social and economic position while rehabilitating community water sources. The program in Burundi builds upon a network of certified farmers and takes the next step – beyond certification – to improve farmers’ livelihoods.

coffee plant rejuvenation & diversification of plots
The plant rejuvenation program plays an essential role in coffee production by revitalizing coffee farms to maintain and increase yield. The program focuses on setting up nurseries and start growing coffee, shade trees, fruit crops, and other seedlings to increase growth and reproductive vitality of coffee trees.
good agricultural practices training
This result area focuses on capacity building and training for farmers. The first Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) trainings took place at the beginning of 2021. The trainings focus on prevent entry of disease onto the farm, an appropriate waste management system, and ensure appropriate storage conditions, among others.
women empowerment
ZOA International completed a commissioned Gender Assessment in the region and developed a plan of action to empower women through the creation of Village Saving and Loan Associations (VSLA), Farm Business Plans, and empowerment trainings. These trainings involved equally man and women of the community and initiated in September 2022.
access to water
In 2021, we conducted a Global Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) field study in partnership with ZOA International. From the 36 water sources visited, 20 were prioritized based on the number of households depending on these water sources. In 2022, the program rehabilitated 20 water sources providing safer and cleaner drinking water to a total of 1.175 households.
